CRB and Credit Terms, Explained Simply

CRB

Credit Reference Bureau: an institution licensed to collect and provide credit information under Kenya’s credit-reference framework.

Credit report

A detailed record of credit information associated with a person or business, including reported accounts and repayment information.

Credit score

A numerical risk indicator produced from credit information. Different bureaus or lenders may use different scoring models.

Clearance certificate

A status document issued by a licensed bureau according to its current rules. It does not erase accurate historical information.

Default

Failure to meet a repayment obligation according to the credit agreement or reporting rules.

Adverse information

Credit information that may indicate repayment problems or other negative credit events.

Dispute

A formal challenge to information you believe is inaccurate, incomplete, duplicated, fraudulent or otherwise incorrect.

Credit provider

An institution or business that extends credit and may report relevant information under applicable rules.

Lender enquiry

A record showing that a lender or authorized party accessed credit information for a permitted purpose.

Guarantor

A person who agrees to be responsible for another borrower’s obligation under specified conditions.

Settlement

An agreement or payment that resolves an outstanding obligation according to terms agreed with the lender.

Outstanding balance

The amount still shown as unpaid on a credit account at a particular point in time.

Data subject

The individual whose personal data is being processed.

Correction

An update made when credit or identity information is shown to be wrong or incomplete.

Licensed CRB

A credit reference bureau licensed under Kenya’s regulatory framework. Always verify the current regulator directory.

Loan readiness

A practical review of credit information, affordability, current obligations and documents before applying for new credit.

Digital credit provider

A provider offering credit through digital channels and subject to applicable Kenyan regulatory requirements.

Identity theft

Unauthorized use of someone’s identifying information, which can sometimes result in unfamiliar credit accounts or enquiries.
